"Music Heals & Unites”
Many migrant families have been separated by the United States Government as they cross the border. Even though the Trump Administration has put out a year-long executive order to stop the separation of these families, this dire situation has yet to be resolved.. Children who are separated from their parents are detained in cages and don’t even have the simple luxury to call their relatives for comfort. Even state officials are not allowed to see these detention centers. Having children live in such a terrible environment is horrifying and no one should face the treatment these children have already received and endured.
Our event will be held in migrant communities in New Orleans where musicians from around the country will gather to play pop, classical, and other genres music on a variety of instruments. Music can be understood as a “universal language” and people from across the globe can understand the message of music despite language or physical barriers. With this concert, we hope to have these children feel reunited with their culture and families.
In tandem with our work in New Orleans, we will be hosting a fundraising event in New York. The proceeds raised from this event will be donated to Another Kind of Girl Collective (AKGC), an organization that works with community leaders to serve migrant children, particularly girls, who are vulnerable to abuse, gender-based violence, early marriage, and lack of access to education. These proceeds will also be used to support Syrian refugee girls in Jordan, in light of the recent aftermath of the United States military pulling out of the region.
